Using Factory Settings () on the Fresh Roast SR540, plus 3 other profiles I recommend

This is mostly just a bit of fun, but towards the end of the video I have 3 recommended profiles you might want to try. This is a good roaster to experiment with, and to try different roast profiles and settings to get the flavors you like. Note that I have added a temperature probe on my stock roaster in order to get a more accurate bean temperature reading. The roaster itself has a temperature display that reads about 20 degrees F higher than the temps shown in this video. The extra temp probe is not needed to produce a good roast, I'm using it to demonstrate what is happening with these different fan and power settings. Thanks to the members of the Fresh Roast Facebook group for recommendations on the profiles.

@luifranco14574 years ago I’ve learned more about roasting coffee on the SR540 with this video (as well as some of the comments) than from some online roasting communities, thank you! 2

@robertingraham84133 years ago Thanks for all the time you put into gathering this footage and info Keith. The last two profiles, even though you showed them to us, you didn't mention what roast you intended them to be. The EVEN profile seem to give you a darker mixed coloring. You really played with the settings. It may have been you but I saw a video showing that lowering the fan settings by a single unit increases the heat at least twice as much as raising the power 1 unit. So I am glad you have the setup to show how mixing the two affects heat and time. I am hoping this helps me. I bought a sample box of great coffee beans from great sources to test and learn this Sr540. Hoping your vids get me on the right track. My first batch at 130 grams seem to take the time to come to the roast level but seems I have a great fan. It does change speeds as I work the knob but I am getting great bean movement. They are constantly rolling down the side of the glass from the top as they surface in the center in a bubble looking form. I don't see any laying down of the beans as they first dry like many who start on fan 9 as I can use 7or 8 and have plenty of movement at first start. I am hopeful that I may be able to do 5 plus gram batches at a time. They just start rolling right away. Beans do not look over dried and are smooth skin. Sample box from Deans Beans that I assume is a good company. They are delivery well boxed and beans individualized in tin-tie printed bags with a nice writing about each expense spared. Starting to read on Sweet Maria's. This looks like a great place to resource everything. ... 1

@Phloored4 years ago Greetings. Considering the sr540.
Do you find it best with the chaf mod to the standard chamber or do you like it best with the extended etsy guy chamber and chaff mod? It's just me I roast for and I drink 17 grams per day. I really like your videos. It's making me realize this is fun. ...

@Foreshaylast year Thank you for this video. Do you have recommendations for a full on dark roast? Specifically for use in making espresso? Thanks! 1

@1timby5 years ago Thanks for the tips. I'm wanting to move up from roasting in a pan to something like this. How is the mess? Do you have a lot of cleanup after each roast? Also, can you do back to back roasts without a long delay?
    Thanks

@taylorwhite36364 years ago Wow the SM roast method produces a very nice curve with your thermocouple. The SR540 is the older fresh roast, right? Have you ever tried the taller chamber? 1

@BaysviewPg3 years ago 1. What is the difference in taste with shorter (4-5 mins) roasting duration versus longer duration (7-8mins)?
    2. Based on your current setup, what is the difference in temperature between ambient (AT) and beans (BT)?
    3. I understand that your ambient temp is pre-installed by the manufacturer, how about the beans temperature probe?

@huntdonger4 years ago Any thoughts on how I would adjust this for an SR800? My understanding is there isn't a major difference minus the fan speed so instead of starting at Fan 9 for Sweet Maria's I would start at Fan 7. 2

@KillRoy03514 years ago how did you hook this roaster up to the computer? I just acquired a freshroast sr540 and would like to try that. 1

@kbrod73 years ago I'm doing 3 minutes at 9/9 fan/temp. Then 8+ minutes at 5/9. That doesn't even seem to get the beans to a city+. Is my unit defective? This is on an 82 degree day with no wind. I can't believe you're getting this at 4 minutes! ...

@coopo953 years ago Do you know a ball park difference from the bean temp and the internal thermometer reading?

@DanMars274 years ago The Sweet Maria's profile looks sharp. I was thinking of powering down for last 20 seconds to avoid a flick, but it doesn't look like you got a flick. ... Our tastes our different: I would have pulled that Sweet Maria's profile about 20-30 seconds earlier. I'd call yours a Full City roast, especially considering the lack of marbling and you've got some surface oils showing a bit. This book has some good sections on fluid bed roasting that you might think are interesting: ... 1

@BaysviewPg3 years ago Q1. I am still trying to achieve some oil spots on some beans, which profile that you use to achieve this - ODD and EVEN or SM?
Q2. At what temperature that the random oil spots will occur?
Q3. Does the random oily spots only emerge after 48 hours?
    Thanks for the helps.
